Syfy Developing 'Beowulf' Series '1408s' Matt Greenberg to Pen Script, EP

Syfy's newest project stems from one of the oldest pieces of literature available, Beowulf.

The development project, from Universal Cable Productions, is an adaptation of the classic epic poem that will follow the titular hero's rise to power against the monster Grendel.

Universal Cable Productions and Omni will co-distribute, with Omni serving as the project's production company. 2007′s "1408″ writer Matt Greenberg will pen the script and executive produce. Brian Hamilton, Michael Chechik, Andrew Cosby and Paulo de Oliveira will join him with exec producer credits.

Beowulf is the title of an Old English epic poem consisting of 3,182 alliterative long lines, dated between the 8th and 11th centuries. It is written by an unknown Anglo-Saxon poet and takes place in Scandinavia.

The classic story was previously adapted in a 2007 Robert Zemeckis animated film starring Angelina Jolie, Crispin Glover and Anthony Hopkins.
