Selena Gomez: I gave into pressure and ‘lost sight of who I was'Having gotten some professional help for her demons at the beginning of the year, Selena Gomez is now ready to pay it forward, sharing the insights she learned about herself with younger kids. The singer, whose on-off relationship with Justin Bieber raised eyebrows when it recently appeared to be back on, spoke at a We Day conference in Oakland, Calif., this week, explaining to the mostly tween-aged attendees that she'd "given into pressure" and needed assistance regaining her sense of self."I'm surrounded by people who are supposed to guide me, and some of them have and others haven't," the 21-year-old told the crowd that had signed on for what We Day calls an "inspirational event" meant to "empower young global citizens." "They pressure me … you gotta be sexy, you gotta be cute, you gotta be nice. You gotta be all these things," she continued, according to People. "You all have pressure that you have to deal with every day I'm sure with school, with work, with friends, with parents, with family. … They tell me what to wear, how to look, what I should say, how I should be. Until recently, I had given into that pressure. I lost sight of who I was. I listened to opinions of people and I tried to change who I am because I thought that others would accept me for it." She concluded by explaining that now she doesn't "know how to be anything but myself," adding that she hoped the audience would get to a similar place with themselves."I know what it's like figuring out what types of friends you have," she said. "I'd be lying if I said I've never tried to make myself better by giving in because I have, but I've learned from my actions and for all of the things I've done, I'm proudest of that. I've learned from my mistakes." Speaking of mistakes, JustJared reports that Gomez was served a subpoena in Los Angeles on Thursday; the papers are believed to be an order to testify in an assault lawsuit filed by a photographer against Justin Bieber.
