Miley Cyrus is leading Time's 2013 Person of the Year Poll … sortaWhen Barack Obama was named Time's Person of the Year in 2012, the magazine's editors wrote that, "in the midst of historic cultural and demographic changes ... Barack Obama is both the symbol and in some ways the architect of this new America." If Miley Cyrus, the current leader of Time's online Person of the Year poll actually wins, those writers might have a somewhat more difficult time summing up her accomplishments and global cultural significance. Or not. Twerk was almost named word of the year by the Oxford Dictionary. The good news -- aside from the fact that editors, not users, have the final say in Time's big end-of-the-year honor -- is that Miley's seeming victory was reportedly the result of vote rigging by two programmers who later took credit for messing with the system to place Miley and her omnipresent tongue ahead of Edward Snowden, Wendy Davis and Rand Paul, among others."[We are] aware of the efforts to affect the results of the Person of the Year poll, and have measures in place so that only legitimate votes are being incorporated in the final tally [Dec. 6]," a rep for Time later told Mashable. "We're delighted that so many people are having fun with this informal poll and contributing to the conversation [about who should win]."
