The first YouTube Music Awards have kicked off at New York City's Pier 36 and are streaming live worldwide.

More than 16 million people voted online for nominees in the six categories, which include Video, Artist and YouTube Phenomenon and Innovation of the Year.

Among those nominated are One Direction, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Eminem, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Taylor Swifts and Selena Gomez.

Eminem, Lady Gaga and Arcade Fire are among those scheduled to perform in the 90-minute show.

Actor Jason Schwartzman will host with comic-musician Reggie Watts. The webcast is scheduled for 90 minutes
