X Factor judges narrow down acts to top 12

6/17/2014

The X Factor judges sent home four acts on Thursday (01Nov12), narrowing the pool of contestants down to the final 12. The first results show of season two was in the hands of the mentors, as the fate of the top 16 acts was left to Simon Cowell, Demi Lovato, Britney Spears, and L.A. Reid. Each judge began by choosing two of their four remaining hopefuls to go straight through to the final 12, and the remaining two acts had to sing for survival, with only one staying in the competition. Young adult mentor Lovato kicked off the results by choosing Jennel Garcia and Paige Thomas as the first two in the top 12, leaving Cece Frey and Willie Jones to sing solos. Frey sang an emotional ballad, while Jones stuck to a love song, but Frey's more powerful vocals outshone Jones, prompting Lovato to send the unique country singer home. Up next was Reid's over 25 year olds, and he immediately put through Vino Alan and Tate Stevens, sending Jason Brock and David Correy to a vocal showdown. After their performances, Reid stated it was down to a decision between "Mr. Entertainment" (Brock) and "a true star" (Correy), and in the end, he decided to keep Brock in the competition. Spears struggled to make her decision but she opted to save Beatrice Miller and Carly Rose Sonenberg, with Arin Ray and Diamond White singing for survival. While Spears admitted the stage was the most difficult one she's had in the competition, she saved Ray and sent home early frontrunner White. Finally, the groups mentored by Cowell were the last to get their results - he advanced Emblem3 and LYRIC145 on to the next round, and while country siblings Sister C gave it their all, they were no match for fivesome 1432's (previously LYLAS) stripped-down version of Lovato's Skyscraper. In addition, Cowell revealed he still is not on board with the 1432 name change, and will let viewers choose their new group name by sending in suggestions online. Next Wednesday (07Nov12), the final 12 acts will take the stage, and the for the first time, America will get to vote for their favorite acts to stay in the competition.
