The Best Dramas of All Time

Action flicks and superheroes dominate in the summer; horror movies shine around Halloween. But during awards season in Hollywood, it’s all about dramas.

Every once in a while a comedy will slip into the Oscars shortlist for best picture — Pixar's "Up" garnered a best picture nod in 2010 — but the prize almost always goes to a drama. This year’s nominees look to be no exception (sorry, “Deadpool” fans).

In anticipation of the Academy Awards, PrettyFamous, an entertainment data site by Graphiq, looked back at the best dramas of all time. To find the best of the best, the data experts ranked the dramas on their Smart Rating — a score out of 100 that takes into account a movie’s IMDb rating, Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer and Audience Score, Gracenote rating, Metacritic Metascore and the inflation-adjusted U.S. box office gross.

Note that the drama category encompasses a variety of sub-genres, ranging from historical films (“The King’s Speech”) to horror thrillers (“The Silence of the Lambs”) to dark comedies (“Fargo”). The resulting ranking spans decades of film history, featuring classics like “12 Angry Men,” as well as modern greats like 2016’s “Moonlight.”
