Plus, it’s last call for cherry blossom pop-ups

Pop-ups seem to be everywhere in D.C. Here, Eater will highlight some of the best pop-up options coming to town over the next month or so, and periodically update this guide when old ones disappear and new ones emerge. This curated guide includes everything from longer-term pop-ups to one-time events. It de-emphasizes residencies lasting more than a couple of months, or events labeled pop-ups that don’t quite fit the format.

OTABE AT DESTINATION OSAKA

The Deal: Otabe, the new roving Japanese enterprise from Masako Morishita (formerly of Momo Yakitori), will bring street snacks to Destination Wedding’s Destination Osaka pop-up bar. Bites include a Spam rice sammie; Japanese chicken curry rice; and miso butter peanuts.

Where: Destination Wedding, 1800 14th Street NW

Dates: Now through Saturday, April 20, starting at 8 p.m. each night

Cost: Dishes are $4-$8

THURSDAY SUPPER SERIES AT BIG BEAR

The Deal: The communal dining series at the casual place in Bloomingdale is hosting guest chef Robbie Tutlewski, who plans to open a D.C. restaurant called Little Donna’s. Tutlewski previously worked under James Beard Foundation Award-winner Chris Bianco in Phoenix, Arizona for several years and also cooked at Tail Up Goat. His new residency at Big Bear plans to compliment his Italian, Polish background, with mid-Atlantic seasonal food.

Where: Big Bear Cafe, 1700 1st Street NW

Dates: Thursday, April 18 starting at 6:30 p.m.

Cost: $65 per ticket

SINGAPORE’S ATLAS VISITS BARMINI

The Deal: Barmini will welcome one of the “World’s 50 Best Bars” for one night. Atlas from Singapore is an art deco-style bar known for its huge gin and champagne collections. Its team in town will whip up its best-selling Atlas Martini, made with London dry gin, ambrato vermouth, orange bitters and champagne vinegar.

Dates: Saturday, April 27

Cost: Tickets are $175 per person.

Y2K POP-UP BAR AT DECADES

The Deal: Nightlife guru Antonis Karagounis is transforming his towering Decades club in Dupont Circle into a shrine to the Y2K era. Cocktails will be heavy on Absolut vodka and Beefeater gin. There’s also a peach and vanilla cognac “Kill Bill.” Snacks from neighboring Rewind bar include Philly cheesesteak subs and Unicorn waffles. Designed and built by local female artists Anna Pineapple and Kira Tai, the pop-up packs in the following from the turn of the century:

  • A New Year’s Eve ball drop from 2000
  • “It’s the End of the World as We Know It” REM lyrics
  • A Lisa Frank tribute wall
  • 1,000 CDs
  • A glow-in-the-dark Nintendo area
  • NSYNC marionette dolls
  • Flip phones
  • Furbies
  • Imac computers
  • Collages of famous faces, movies, and trends from 1995 to 2005.

Where: Inside Decades at 1209 Connecticut Avenue NW

Dates: Friday, April 5 through the end of May; Sunday to Thursday from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m.

CHERRY BLOSSOM SUSHI POP-UP AT THE RITZ GEORGETOWN

The Deal: Every Thursday during the month of April, the Ritz-Carlton Georgetown’s lobby-level living room will offer complimentary samples of hand-rolled sushi inspired by the currently-blooming gift Japan gifted the U.S. in 1912.

Where: The Ritz-Carlton, Georgetown; 3100 South Street NW

ESAAN AT EL TECHO

What: The acclaimed northern Thai restaurant in McLean will pop up at Shaw’s rooftop respite El Techo for one night in May. Owner and Bangkok native Yutthpon “Tu” Wetchapinan will serve a six-item a la carte menu starring Esaan’s best sellers, alongside cocktails from Tiger Fork’s Ian Fletcher and El Techo’s full bar menu.

Where: El Techo, 606 Florida Avenue NW

Dates: Monday, May 13 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

CHERRY BLOOM TERRACE

The Deal: The Wharf’s La Vie is unveiling a scenic ode D.C.’s pink-hued flowers, while simultaneously previewing dishes at Tabu, its new sister sushi restaurant sliding in below. The cavernous Mediterranean restaurant’s new spot will be manned by chef Nobu Yamazaki (Michelin-starred Sushi Taro). Expect lots of sandos and cocktails heavy on Japanese spirits and ingredients.

Where: La Vie’s terrace, 88 District Square SW

Dates: Tuesday, March 19 through Saturday, April 20

Cost: An entrance fee of $15 per person includes one beverage. Bites start at $8 and cocktails are $12-$15

ROSE GARDEN AT COMMISSARY

The Deal: Commissary in Logan Circle, which claims to be one of the first restaurants in D.C. to debut frosé, is rolling out an indoor rosé garden in April. Its brand of choice is Hamptons favorite Wolffer Estate, which slings a Summer in a Bottle Rosé, rosé gin, and cider. The pop-up will be designed after Wolffer Estate’s rosé bottle, which sports a rainbow of flowers, butterflies, twinkling lights, and Spanish moss. On Mondays, rosé bottles are half off all day until 10 p.m. Executive chef Victor Garcias is also curating a lineup of bites designed to pair with the pink drink.

PESCE TOO

The Deal: Dupont Circle seafood stop Pesce is setting up shop inside the Eastern Market outpost of Bullfrog Bagels, Washington City Paper reports. Chef Andrew LaPorta is serving a shortened menu of Nantucket Bay scallops and braised oxtail with whipped potatoes; Portuguese octopus with chickpeas, ginger, and yogurt; and linguine with Littleneck clams, garlic, white wine, olive oil, and crust ($16-$26). Bullfrog Bagels owner Jeremiah Cohen formerly hosted Tibetan pop-up Dorjee Momo in the second-story space.

Dates: Through the spring; Dinner is served Wednesdays through Saturdays from 5:30 to 10 p.m., with patio seating available during warmer weather

CHERRY BLOSSOM PUB and PUBLIN

The Deal: Starting Thursday, March 7, Drink Company’s annual tribute to D.C.’s short pink flower season will expand with the addition of shamrock-themed Publin bar. The new addition to the pop-up is stuffed with hundreds of oversized four-leaf clovers and spring flowers. A huge gold beehive hangs from the ceiling. Cocktails include a Manhattan-style Tipperary (sweet vermouth, green chartreuse, orange bitters) and the Four Leaf Closure (Jameson Caskmates IPA Edition, Green Spot, apple soda). There will also be a collection of high-end whiskeys to sip.

The pub’s existing setup is modeled after a French fairy tale garden from the Palace de Versailles. Another room serves vegan miso broth and noodles from Hiro Mitsui, who runs Ramen by UZU in Union Market. Cocktails include a Honeydew, Honey See — with sake, Americano vermouth, fermented rice syrup, cucumber, honeydew, and absinthe — and the Toki Highball with Toki whisky, Perrier, and grapefruit and elderflower tincture. A more dressed-down order is a sake shot dunked in Miller High Life.

XIAO LONG BAO DINNER SERIES

The Deal: Maketto’s new weekly dinner series will highlight limited-time menu items at Erik Bruner-Yang’s Cambodian-Taiwanese eatery, like unlimited soup dumplings, every Wednesday starting in March.

Dates: Starting Wednesday, March 6

Cost: $40 per person; make reservations here for seatings at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

RUM-DMV AT BARREL

The Deal: Owner Matthew Weiss and the Barrel team transformed the downstairs Elixir Bar into a throwback drinking den from the 1980s and early 1990s, complete with original and classic rum-focused cocktails like the “Beets by Dre.” Rum-DMV — a name inspired by rapper Run-DMC, the spirit, and the D.C. area — will also feature arcade games and a jukebox exclusively playing hip hop from that genre.

Where: 613 Pennsylvania Avenue SE.

Dates: Starting Friday, October 5

MOM & POP AT SHOP MADE IN DC

The Deal: Homegrown coffee and gelato chain Dolcezza is installing a modified version of its Mosaic District offshoot, Mom & Pop, for the next six months at Dupont’s Shop Made in DC. Featured offerings include: rotating local pour-overs, breakfast sandwiches, salads, snack boards, meatball subs, grilled cheese, plus local beer and wine.

Dates: Starting Monday, April 2

Cost: Salads and sandwiches are $8-$12; gelato runs $6-$8; pastries are $3-$5; beer and wine is $6-$10.
