Make A Perfect Moscow Mule Every Time

Delish logo Delish 10/8/2021 Lauren Miyashiro

There are few things more refreshing on a hot summer day than a chilled Moscow mule. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't be drinking it in colder weather, too. The strong ginger-lime flavor makes it a perfect contender for a winter cocktail.

What's in a Moscow mule?

A Moscow mule is actually SO easy to make. It only has three ingredients: vodka, ginger beer, and lime. We like to garnish it with mint, but it's not necessary. (Throwing a party? You need to try our Moscow Mule Punch!)

Is a Moscow mule originally from Russia?

Not exactly. A woman named Sophie Berezinski had immigrated to New York from Russia, along with her father's surplus of copper mugs that she needed to sell. She worked with a bartender who was trying to push his hand-crafted ginger beer, and together they mixed up the first Moscow mule.

So...why copper mugs?

Aside from tradition, the copper mugs offer a scientific benefit, too: The copper gives chilled drinks an extra-cool sensation.

Are there any variations on the Moscow Mule?

Truly so many. Sub Bourbon for vodka, you have a Kentucky Mule. Sub for tequila and you get a Mexican Mule. Also did we mention our obsession with spicing up this cocktail? Don't take our word for it, check out this Mermaid Mule, or this fancy Champagne Mule. And if its around the holidays you gotta try our Mistletoe Mule.
