Who doesn't love a good strawberry shortcake? Fluffy whipped cream, sweet strawberries, and a tender biscuit-what could go wrong? According to our tasters, quite a bit actually! We pit two very different celebs-with two very different shortcake recipes-head to head in a battle of epic [sugary] proportions. Read on to see whose recipe took the cake. πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰

INA'S RECIPE

Ina keeps it pretty classic, with a few fancy flourishes. Her strawberries are tossed in sugar and a splash of Grand Marnier-an orange liqueur that adds a little je ne sais quoi. These fancy strawberries are paired with a dollop of lightly sweetened whipped cream and, of course, the biscuits. Oh, the biscuits. Perfectly sweet, super tender and fluffy biscuits. The clear standout of the dish, all of the tasters noted that this was a damn good biscuit.

Here's where things start going off the rails: plating the dish. Our girl Ina suggests serving the strawberries and cream in a martini glass, with the biscuits on the side. No one puts baby in the corner, but more importantly, nobody should put these biscuits on the side. They're the best part! As for the martini glass-it feels very 90s, very precarious, and overall not the most efficient way to eat strawberry shortcake. 🀷 We're a little perplexed by that one.

GWYNETH'S RECIPE

As expected, Gwyneth's recipe has a healthy spin. That's ok! We're healthy sometimes! Unfortunately, her recipe might have been a little too healthy for our tasters. Everyone approved of the strawberries and cream: simple and lightly sweetened whipped cream and strawberries tossed in sugar and balsamic vinegar. We loved the contrast of sweet berries with the vinegar-y tang, so big points for that! Unfortunately, everyone was a little less enthusiastic about her biscuits. Made with spelt flour, shortening, and buttermilk, they fell a little flat. Well, a lot of flat actually. They were not at all sweet, in fact they were a little bitter. The spelt flour made them dense and dry, and our tasters were not having it, though they did appreciate it being served as a sandwich (VS Ina's do-it-yourself dessert.)

THE VERDICT

Despite the less-than-desirable presentation, Ina wins! All thanks to those golden, buttery biscuits. 😍 They worked beautifully with the simple whipped cream and lightly sweetened strawberries. We're definitely going to whip up this dessert again soon. Our suggestion? Make the recipe, skip the martini glass. πŸ˜‰
