I don't know why, but freezing temperatures and even snow storms never bother me in December. Maybe it's all of the holiday cheer or the fact that I finally get to break out my favorite winter boots, but the seasonal doldrums never really set in for me until February or so—aka, right about now. At this point, those picture-perfect flurries have lost their charm, and I'm sick of the coat I was thrilled to snag on Black Friday.

In times like these, one of the only things that helps is cooking. During this time of year, I keep cheesy baked pastas and slow-cooked braises on repeat—but nothing comforts me quite like a big batch of soup. Because no matter what type of soup I'm making, whether it's a tangy hot and sour or classic chicken and rice, slurping something down to the bottom of the bowl always makes me feel warm and cozy.
