Jessica Simpson's Trainer Swears By This Exercise

Harley Pasternak has been Hollywood's go-to trainer for years. His client list includes everyone from Kim and Kanye to Jessica Simpson, Julianne Hough, and Mandy Moore, and he's one of the trainers on Revenge Body With Khloe Kardashian. Given his impressive (and well-paid) clients, you'd expect him to promote high-end workout machines or unrealistically expensive meal plans. Amazingly, the one piece of health advice he gives to everyone he works with doesn't cost a thing.

At a recent Reebok Speed event, Pasternak shared this bit of advice: "Walk. I tell my clients you're wasting your time and my time coming to work out if you're sedentary the rest of the time," according to Well+Good. He went on to explain that a sedentary lifestyle is largely to blame for poor health. "It's primarily tied to a lack of movement. And as we become more technologically savvy with every innovation, we move less and less."

To combat that, Pasternak recommends the average person walk at least 12,000 steps a day to be in good shape - that's 2,000 more than the often-cited 10,000 steps goal, and clocks in at around 6 miles, depending on your stride. FYI, J.Simps counts her steps on a pedometer, so no need to get fancy with the tracking device.

If you want to be ripped, Pasternak says to shoot for 14,000 steps. At around 7 miles each day, it'll definitely take a little planning to get to, but it's not impossible. Plus, look at it as saved gas/subway money and you're killing two birds with one stone.
