Most of us would agree that using deodorant is a pretty crucial step to take before leaving your house during these sweltering months. But, according to a shocking new YouGov poll, nearly 40 percent of adults between the ages of 18 and 24 haven’t used either deodorant or anti-perspirant in the last month. In fact, 48 percent of them admitted they haven’t even bought these products in the last year.

Judging from the data, it seems the popularity of this hygiene product has waned with each generation. A large majority (84 percent) of those 45 to 54 years old say they’re still using deodorant, compared to 78 percent of 35 to 44 year olds, and 69 percent of 25 to 34 year olds.

But before you go shaking your head at the state of the hygiene habits of today’s youth, the poll results did show that younger age groups are still keeping it clean in many other ways. For example, they fall in line with the rest of the American population regarding how often you should wash your hair (20 percent say you should do so every day).

It’s also worth noting that there’s been some concern about whether or not deodorant is safe to use. Although the American Cancer Society says there’s no clear link between deodorant and cancer at this time, some research suggests the aluminum compounds in antiperspirants and deodorants that keep you from sweating could cause damage after being absorbed by the skin, changing the estrogen receptors and potentially leading to breast cancer.

But the poll indicates that health concerns aren’t the driving force behind the trend; young people seemingly just don’t think deodorant is necessary. Hey, to each their own!
