Pennsylvania-based food retailer Weis Markets is now offering COVID-19 vaccinations in limited locations.

The retailer, which operates 196 stores across seven states, will only be administering the vaccine at in-store pharmacies in New York and Pennsylvania for now.

In New York, any residents aged 65 and over are currently eligible to receive a shot. In Pennsylvania, meanwhile, residents aged over 65, healthcare workers and people with pre-existing conditions all qualify to receive a shot at Weis Markets.

The company says on its website that "additional schedules" will open up on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.

You will only be able to sign up for an appointment one day prior to the immunization.

To schedule an appointment, you will need to provide the following details, according to the Weis Markets website: "Name, address, date of birth, cell, email, Rx insurance, plan name, ID#, BIN, PCN and relationship for insurance (cardholder/spouse etc.)"

Weis will be offering people the Moderna vaccine, which has been shown to be 95 percent effective at preventing illness, including severe cases.

This vaccine requires two shots, the second of which must be administered 28 days after the first in order to provide maximum protection against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19.

Weis Market pharmacy staff will schedule your second appointment for you after you have received your first dose.

A handful of Weis locations will also be providing drive-thru COVID-19 tests as part of a public-private partnership involving Texas company eTrueNorth, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, state and local officials, and pharmacy and lab partners.

These tests are free and must be booked prior to arrival via the website doineedacovid19test.com.

Currently, vaccinations via this program are only available to health care workers and first responders, other individuals with symptoms, and other individuals without symptoms in accordance with state vaccination plans.

Participating Weis Market locations in this program include:

  • 1272 East Penn Street, Muncy PA
  • 4525 Valley Road, Enola PA
  • 719 Route 522, Selinsgrove PA
  • 112 Atlantic Avenue, Dingmans Ferry PA
