Ethics Experts: Trump's Attempts To Address Conflicts Of Interest "Meaningless"

Director of the Office of Government Ethics Walter Schaub says Donald Trump's announcement that he was setting up a trust to hold his business interests and turning management over to his sons was "meaningless from a conflicts of interest perspective." "The idea of setting up a trust to run his operating businesses adds nothing to the equation," Schaub said in remarks at the Brookings Institute just hours after Trump made the announcement on Wednesday. The idea of the trust was first covered by Politico last month, who found that the arrangement would still allow Trump and his administration members to benefit financially from the businesses in question, which would completely defeat the purpose of even setting up what Politico called "a half-blind trust," but what Schaub insists, "The only thing it has in common with a blind trust is the label: trust." Schaub added, "The plan does not comport with the tradition of our presidents over the last 40 years."
