The actor, who was also an accomplished theater star, made his film debut opposite Tom Cruise in 'Top Gun' as pilot Marcus “Sundown” Williams. He later played Hans Gruber’s eccentric computer hacker opposite Bruce Willis as detective John McClane in 'Die Hard.' His biggest role came later: Jimmy Trivette, the right-hand man to Chuck Norris’ tough sergeant on all 196 episodes of the series 'Walker, Texas Ranger.'  Gilyard Jr. died a beloved university film and theater professor, however, as his death was confirmed by the University of Nevada in Las Vegas.“It is with profound sadness that I share this news,” Dean Nancy Uscher wrote in a post on Instagram. “His students were deeply inspired by him, as were all who knew him.
