Meghan Markle broke one of the cardinal rules of wedding guest dressing today as she donned a black outfit (which some outlets described as navy) for close friend Misha Nonoo's wedding.

The Duchess of Sussex, 38, was seen wearing a $14,000 puff-sleeve embroidered tulle gown by Valentino as she arrived at Villa Aurelia in Rome alongside Prince Harry, 35.

Prince Harry donned a smart black tuxedo.

The sheer top featured ballooning three-quarter length sleeves, and appeared to feature some scallop and diamante detailing across the back.

The royal wore her dark hair pinned up in a low chiffon bun with loose tendrils curling around her chin, revealing glittering gold earrings resembling wings or feathers.

She carried a small red clutch bag.

Stylist Lucas Armitage was surprised by Meghan's choice.

"Wedding guests usually shun black in favor of a more complementary color to pair with white," he said. "Meghan isn’t one for playing by etiquette, as we well know, but even for her this is fairly shocking."

The Duke and Duchess beamed as they arrived at the event today, grinning at other guests as they entered the venue.

While the Valentino dress is completely sheer, Meghan appears to be wearing a black slip underneath.

Despite suggesting it was a controversial choice, Armitage said that the duchess looked particularly "on trend" in the outfit.

"Black sheer garments have been seen all over catwalk for the season ahead, so Meghan is riding the crest of the trend wave early," he explained. "The slightly OTT jewelry is also tapping into the eclectic accessory trend we are seeing coming through."

He added, "Meghan perfectly distills the catwalk into her own brand of on-trend chic."

The outfit is reminiscent of several worn by the Duchess of Sussex, and may be a nod to her engagement photoshoot with Prince Harry, in which she wowed in a one-of-a-kind sheer couture dress worth a whopping £56,000 (approximately $70,000).

And more recently she donned a stunning £3,454 (approximately $4,300) mid-length black gown by designer Jason Wu for the European premiere of The Lion King, which featured a sheer panel across the top of the bodice and sleeves.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived in the Italian capital on Thursday to attend the nuptials.

US-based fashion designer Misha, 31, is a close friend of both Harry and Meghan, and is rumored to have set the pair up on a blind date in July 2016.

She is marrying Michael Hess, 33.

Misha arrived at the venue shortly before her guests, riding in a golf buggy through the gates of the villa alongside close friend Princess Eugenie.

Around 200 guests will attend the grand event at Villa Aurelia. The property is close to the Vatican and has a giant terrace, ball room and dining room that serves Michelin-star-quality food. One of the most prestigious wedding venues in all of Italy, is available for rent for around £20,000 (approximately $25,000) per day, not including food, wine or flowers.
