Here's a secret: I've tried hundreds of hair products on my 3b curls over the years, and few work as well as a DIY recipe I picked up on YouTube. Creator Naptural85's recipe for flaxseed gel is remarkable, but when I don't feel like making it in advance, Jāsön's Flaxseed Hi Shine Styling Gel is just as outstanding. And Amazon shoppers agree: According to fans with "incredibly gray and dull" hair, it delivers healthy strands and "hyper shine."

If you haven't tried anything from Jāsön before, the cruelty-free brand has a long history of using strictly safe, gentle ingredients. I trust the brand more than any other, for personal reasons: A toothpaste with sodium lauryl sulfate gave me a long, rough case of contact dermatitis as a kid, and this brand was one of the few that offered SLS-free options that didn't taste like trash. Jāsön was clean back when that was rare, so I'll always be loyal — especially because the shine its hair gel imparts is like a sparkling glaze.

Other people are just as impressed. A fan with waves commented that the formula leaves their texture "soft, shiny, and defined," while another person with curls wrote that it's the first product they've found in over a decade that stands on its own; it's moisturizing enough that they don't need a leave-in conditioner, it doesn't flake, and it offers great hold. "I only wish this came in a larger bottle," they added. "I'm shook."

It's versatile, too, per a shopper who uses it pre-straightening to make their hair feel fuller. If you're on TikTok, you may have seen the viral videos of people using flaxseed gel to encourage hair growth — and as dermatologist Craig Ziering, MD, previously told Byrdie, the lignan compounds present in flaxseed have "very high antioxidant qualities to keep hair dense [and] shiny, and can maximize volume and elasticity." The ingredient is also packed with vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, and anti-inflammatory alpha-linolenic acid, which Ziering said can promote healthier hair follicles; Jāsön's formula also brings in panthenol, wheat protein, and extracts from tea leaf and horsetail.

All of that's great news, especially if you're interested in following TikTok creators and celebrities down the path of slicked-back buns. Per an enthusiast, the benefits are real: The gel makes their hair look thicker, and they received the compliments to prove it. As a last customer (who works 10-hour days in a kitchen) testified, it even maintained their hairstyle through sweat, heat, and splashes — "at the end of the work day, my hair still looked as if I'd just done it."

If you'd like to try Jāsön's Flaxseed Hi Shine Styling Gel for soft hair that gleams, get it for just $7 at Amazon.
