Why my sister fired me from her bridal party

Lucy was thrilled to be the maid of honor for her sister, but events leading up to the wedding weren’t exactly ‘smooth sailing.’ As told to Libby-Jane Charleston.

I was really excited about my sister’s wedding.

Fiona had been dating Sam for six years, so it felt like this wedding was a long time coming. He was a great guy, and they’d had a few dramas over the years and split up a couple of times but, apart from that, they were in a great place.

The most exciting thing was that Fiona had confided in me that she was pregnant, and she wanted to get married before her baby was born.

I helped heaps with the preparations, even driving her to the Hunter Valley to check out wineries. Her dream wedding was to have the reception at a winery – she worked in sales in the wine industry, so it was close to her heart.

We had a great few days together inspecting the various locations and we were closer than ever. We’re only 18 months apart in age and have always been close and very rarely had an argument.

That was all about to change in a big way. I guess I’ve got no one to blame but myself, and I really messed up big time.

Firstly, her pregnancy was supposed to be a secret – Fiona is quite old fashioned and didn’t want everyone to think she was having a ‘shotgun wedding.’ So I was the only person apart from Sam who knew Fiona was pregnant.

The other thing was that I became reacquainted with Sam’s best friend Tom, whom I’d met a while ago and always thought was hot – but there was nothing between us until just before the wedding.

Tom had also been helping with some of the preparation and one day he suggested we get together for a drink to talk about the upcoming hens and bucks’ nights, just for fun. We were arranging for the stag and doe party to join up at midnight.

That night, after our brainstorming session, I ended up in bed with Tom. I’d had way too much to drink and, whenever I drink, I talk a lot and sometimes I spill secrets. We were in bed, I was still pretty drunk, and I let it slip that Fiona was pregnant. Tom cracked up laughing because he had no idea.

I think I made him promise not to tell anybody. I didn’t know Tom all that well, so I had no idea whether I can rely on him to keep his mouth shut but, soon afterwards, word spread like wildfire that my sister was ‘up the duff.’

In fact, word quickly made it to my parents, who were very upset about it. Yes, I know it’s 2018, but they are elderly and we come from an ethnic background where it’s looked down upon to be pregnant at your wedding. That’s just the way it was.

My sister confronted me, bawling her eyes out, telling me I’d ruined things for her and that she couldn't believe that I told our parents.

That’s when I said, “Wait! I didn’t tell Mom and Dad. I only told Tom.”

That’s when I confessed that I had a one night stand with him. The next thing I knew, Fiona called a ‘family meeting’ where she broke the news – I was no longer ‘suitable’ to be her maid of honor.

I burst into tears. I was really upset. I thought this was a ridiculous punishment, but my parents both agreed with my sister’s decision. So that’s how I was sacked as maid of honor.

The funny thing is, on their wedding night I had a ‘second night stand’ with Tom – who hadn’t been fired from his best man duties. Who knows, it might end up being something we can all laugh about one day.
