Would YOU let your toddler wear a bikini? Mother insists two pieces turn little girls into 'mini-adults' - but other parents say she's being 'judgy'

The Mumsnet user explained that while she wouldn't 'bat an eyelid' if she saw a toddler running around naked or in their underwear, she feels dressing little girls in bikinis amounts to turning them into 'mini adults'.

The mother, known only by her username as GoodAfternoonSeattle, posted: 'Why does a 3 year old need something to cover their chest on the beach or at the pool??'

While some Mumsnet users agreed that bikinis for little girls are 'all wrong', not all parents welcomed her criticism, with one fellow mother insisting she was being 'judgy' and said they are 'just for fun'.

GoodAfternoonSeattle asked other parents if she was being unreasonable for holding her belief.

She wrote: 'Personally I prefer my own daughter (who is three) to be covered on the beach so that she doesn't burn. I'd probably put her in one of those swimsuits that's like shorts and tshirt.

'I'd put her in a swimming costume at an indoor pool. I wouldn't bat an eyelid at a preschool aged child running around naked or in pants.

'But I don't understand the bikini trend for toddlers - Why does a 3 year old need something to cover their chest on the beach or at the pool??

'Urgh. Why are we trying to turn our children into mini adults at every turn?'

Some Mumsnet users were in agreement with her, saying they find two pieces for children strange.

One posted: 'I think bikinis on toddlers are ghastly! Bikini tops are for concealing/supporting boobs. Let toddlers wear something comfortable and free, they have plenty of time to wear bikinis when they hit puberty.'

Another wrote: 'My problem is with clothing that looks as though its been designed with an adult in mind.... Such as skimpy triangle bikini tops, shoes for toddlers with 3 inch heels.'

However, some said there was nothing wrong with bikinis, and suggested that those who have problems with them are sexualizing children's swimwear.

One wrote: 'It's only sexualized if you see it that way otherwise it's just an item of clothing.'

Another said: 'I am in my 40s and wore bikinis when I was a little girl. Lots of girls did. They weren’t skimpy/sexualized but were still 2 pieces. And my parents were pretty strict.'

A third agreed: 'Save the judginess for more important stuff, I say.'
