Woolworths launches new online marketplace offering thousands of items

Woolworths has launched a new online marketplace offering customers a one-stop-shop that's set to rival e-commerce giants Amazon and eBay.

In a major shake-up in the retail sector, Australian shoppers can add big ticket items like a Dyson vacuum cleaner or a Nutribullet blender to their grocery carts - and have them all delivered straight to their doorstep.

There are currently 2,200 products to choose from via the new Everyday Market platform, including kitchen gadgets, cookware, home essentials, health, beauty, toys, baby and pet care. 

The supermarket chain has created the platform via its online store for customers to order everything they need in one convenient place while shopping for groceries.

When asked whether Woolworths was moving in the same direction as Amazon, Lance Eerhard, general manager of Everyday Market, said the supermarket was extending its range to provide an 'easier' and 'simple' shopping experience. 

'We're focusing on our existing customers and how their shopping experiences go with our marketplace - we'll let them dictate where we take this platform,' Mr Eerhard told Daily Mail Australia.

He said shoppers can also receive points on all their purchases from the online marketplace through their Everyday Rewards card.

The supermarket is looking to expand its marketplace range by up to 20,000 items within the next 12 months.

'It's still very early days but our big ambition is to more than double our online range. It's an exciting journey and we're looking to extend those aisles,' he said.

Mr Eerhard said there are already more than 12 million customers using the supermarket's website to shop for groceries every week.

'With Everyday Market, we want to help our customers get more of their everyday needs in the one seamless and convenient online shop,' he said.

'We're starting with a small group of partners and it really is just the beginning. We have ambitions to more than double our range and offer tens of thousands of products to our customers over time.'

As well as offering more choice to online customers, the marketplace will also provide partner brands with fresh opportunities to grow their business.

Woolworths has been piloting the Everyday Market in select areas since July 2021.

'The response from customers during the pilot was really encouraging, with strong demand for cookware, kitchen appliances and toys,' Mr Eerhard said.

'Our customers liked being able to get lots of different needs in one place - whether it be a kids' toy for a birthday, an air fryer to perfect a new recipe, or a set of clippers for a lockdown haircut.

'We're excited to take Everyday Market national and look forward to growing our range with new and existing partners for our customers in the months ahead.' 

Customers can select as many Everyday Market products as they want for the one flat $10 shipping fee and there is no minimum spend on orders.

However, bulkier, heavier or larger items may incur additional shipping fees, which will be disclosed at the checkout. 

Woolworths is the largest online food and grocery retailer in Australia and reported annual sales of more than $3.5billion in the 2021 financial year. This was an increase of around 75 per cent on the 2020 financial year.
