Congress holds hearing on slavery reparations

A day after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-Ky.) said he was against reparations for slavery, on June 19 the House held a hearing to discuss a bill that would create a commission to study the legacy of slavery. One of the panelists, writer Ta-Nehisi Coates, criticized McConnell, saying, “Victims of that plunder are very much alive today. I am sure they’d love a word with the majority leader.”
