The 20 best cities where you can buy a house for under $100K

GOBankingRates Logo By Joel Anderson of GOBankingRates | Slide 1 of 21: The dream of homeownership has long been a key function of the American dream, but that dream is increasingly out of reach for many Americans. In particular, residents of major bustling urban centers are finding a lack of inexpensive homes, with even modestly priced homes running close to or over $1 million. But, for those people ready to leave behind the big city and live in a home of their own, there are options in smaller cities where cheap houses abound.
A new study from GOBankingRates found 20 cities where you can expect to buy a house for under $100,000. The study started with nearly 7,000 American cities and whittled the list down to just 372 cities where the median list price on Zillow was $100,000 or less. From there, the cities were scored based on total crimes per 1,000 people, the city’s livability score sourced from AreaVibes and the number of school districts identified as among the state’s best by Niche that are located within the city.
With all those factors in place, the resulting list is 20 cities where you can find cheap homes for under $100,000 and still represents a relatively safe, livable city. If you’re looking for a way to escape a sky-high mortgage payment that will leave you scrambling to make ends meet month after month, these cities might be a good place to start.
