                  Suncor Energy Inc , formerly known as Suncor Inc., was originally formed by the amalgamation under the Canada Business Corporations Act on August 22, 1979, of Sun Oil Company Limited, incorporated in 1923, and Great Canadian Oil Sand...mores Limited, incorporated in 1953. On January 1, 1989, it further amalgamated with a wholly owned subsidiary under the Canada Business Corporations Act. It is an integrated energy company focused on developing petroleum resource basins — Canada's Athabasca oil sands. The Company explores for, acquires, develops, produces and markets crude oil and natural gas in Canada and internationally; it transports and refines crude oil and it markets petroleum and petrochemical products primarily in Canada. It markets third-party petroleum products. It also conducts energy trading act...moreivities focused principally on the marketing and trading of crude oil, natural gas and byproducts. Its other businesses include Energy Trading and Renewable Energy. The Company's products are; Hydrocarbons, Crude oil, Natural gas, Natural gas liquids, and Development wells. It operates in the following operating segments; Oil Sands, Exploration and Production, Refining and Marketing & Energy Trading. Oil Sands include the Company’s operations in northeast Alberta to develop and produce synthetic crude oil and related products, through the recovery and upgrading of bitumen from mining and in situ operations. This segment also includes the Company’s joint interest in Fort Hills and Joslyn North mining projects as well as its ownership interest in the Syncrude oil sands mining and upgrading joint venture, located near Fort McMurray, Alberta. Exploration and Production includes exploration and production of natural gas, crude oil and natural gas liquids in Western Canada, offshore activity in East Coast Canada, with interests in the Hibernia, Terra Nova, White Rose and Hebron oilfields, and the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas in the United Kingdom, Norway, Libya and Syria. Refining and Marketing includes the refining of crude oil products, and the distribution and marketing of these and other purchased products through retail stations located in Canada and the United States, as well as a lubricants plant located in Eastern Canada. Energy Trading includes the company’s investments in renewable energy projects that include six operating wind power projects across Canada, two wind power projects under development in Ontario, and the St. Clair ethanol plant in Ontario. Also includes Energy Trading activities that primarily involve the marketing, supply and trading of crude oil, natural gas and byproducts, and the use of midstream infrastructure and financial derivatives to optimize related trading strategies. The Company competes in virtually every aspect of its business with other energy companies. The petroleum industry also competes with other industries in supplying energy, fuel and related products to consumers.
