The Medical Products business manufactures intravenous (IV) solutions and administration sets, premixed drugs and drug-reconstitution systems, pre-filled vials and syringes for injectable drugs, IV nutrition products, infusion pumps, and inhalation anesthetics, as well as products and services related to pharmacy compounding, drug formulation and packaging technologies. The business manufactures solutions and other products for peritoneal dialysis, a home-based therapy, and also distributes products for hemodialysis, which is generally conducted in a hospital or clinic. The Company has its own direct sales force and also makes sales to and through independent distributors, drug wholesalers acting as sales agents and specialty pharmacy or other alternate site providers. The Company faces substantial competition in each of its segments from international and domestic healthcare and pharmaceutical companies of all sizes. The BioScience segment faces competitors from pharmaceutical, biotechnology and other companies. The Medical Products segment faces competition from medical device manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies. The Company’s operations and many of the products manufactured or sold by the Company are subject to extensive regulation by numerous government agencies, both within and outside the United States.
