A Timeline of Botox's History

Lots of people might not have heard about Allergan but when it comes to Botox, they know what that is. Let's rewind a bit. Botox, also known as botulinum toxin, is a powerful poison produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Scientists began using botulinum toxin to treat strabismus (crossed eyes) and muscle spasms. Then in 1987, Vancouver doctors Jean and Alistair Carruthers discovered cosmetic properties in the treatment. Soon after, the American global pharmaceutical company Allergan licensed the treatment and branded it as Botox. Botox has been a household name, especially in the field of cosmetic beauty, after the FDA approved its use in 2002. It is popular for its ability in reducing facial wrinkles.
