Mixed Signals in U.S. Economic Data

Feb.15 -- Reports on the U.S. economy this week offered diverging signals. Disappointing retail sales for the month of December revealed the first cracks in the US economy. To complicate the picture, the Fed’s Empire State index, a survey of factories in New York state, showed expectations for business conditions six months ahead snapped back from the weakest in almost three years.
