With the highest-grossing movie of the year under belt in "Furious 7," James Wan has closed a deal to direct "Aquaman" for Warner Bros., the studio announced Wednesday.

Jason Momoa will star as the DC superhero, who is the King of the Seven Seas. This reluctant ruler of Atlantis, caught between a surface world constantly ravaging the sea and Atlanteans looking to lash out in revolt, is committed to protecting the entire globe.

Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder will produce with Charles Roven, while Kurt Johnstad will write the script with Wan's input.

"The Aquaman film will be a major tentpole picture for us and James's span of work has proven him able to take on any manner of project, bringing his incredible creative talent and unique voice to the material," said WB's Greg Silverman.

Next up for Wan is a sequel to "The Conjuring," the horror movie he directed for New Line that grossed $318 million in 2013.

WB is scheduled to release "Aquaman" in 2018, after which Wan will turn his attention to Sony's "Robotech," based on the popular 1980s anime series.

Wan is represented by Paradigm, Stacey Testro International and Myman Greenspan.
