Kevin Garcia, founding bass player for American indie rock outfit Grandaddy, died Tuesday (May 2) after suffering a massive stroke. He was 41.

The musician was admitted to the Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, Calif. on Monday after experiencing a brain injury described by medics as "catastrophic," according to a Gofundme page launched in his name.

Garcia was surrounded by his closest friends and family when he passed away, the band confirmed in a Facebook post. "There are no accurate words to express what we need to. We are absolutely shattered to say that we lost our friend and band mate Kevin Garcia early this afternoon," the statement reads.

Garcia was a fifteen-year-old when he started up Grandaddy with frontman Jason Lytle and drummer Aaron Burtch. "He was an actual angel. He navigated life with a grace, a generosity and a kindness that was utterly unique. And contagious. He is loved so deeply by so many," the statement adds. "Right now the four of us are grieving together."

The muso is survived by his two children, Jayden and Gavin, his grandmother Joan, his parents Randy and Barbara, his brothers Craig and Jeff and his wife Sondra.

Grandaddy returned earlier this year with their first album in more than a decade, Last Place, which they've supported with a slew of tour dates. Their next gig is scheduled for Monday (May 8) at Neptune Theatre in Seattle, WA. The band has charted on the Billboard 200 on three separate occasions, with Sumday (No. 84 in 2003), Last Place (No. 150) and Just Like The Fambly Cat (No. 171 in May 2006).
