A driver arrested after a crash and police pursuit Thursday claimed sovereign nation status and said she did not have to follow Massachusetts laws, police said.

Abington police saw Jessica Davis, 36, of Bridgewater, hit a vehicle and take off on Route 18, police said. The officer and a State Police trooper pursued Davis’ vehicle.

Police said they twice tried to stop her by boxing in her vehicle.

“At that point the defendant the proceeded back into the roadway, turning to the right, and then driving off the roadway onto a lawn of a home,” said Assistant District Attorney Matthew Chin.

The chase stretched for about four miles through Abington and Weymouth on main roads and side streets before ending in front of South Shore Hospital. Police said they had to smash the window of her car and drag Davis out.

Police said as they did, Davis claimed to "sovereign nation status," possibly referring to movement more commonly known as "sovereign citizens" who reject the authority of government and laws.

Her lawyer said Davis ran because she was scared.

“She says when the first police officer approached her, he punched the window, instead of saying, ‘Please roll your window down, license and registration.’ As you heard the facts reiterated, the second time they pulled her over and she stopped, they came at her with guns drawn,” defense attorney William Gillespie said.

She was charged with leaving the scene of a crash resulting in property damage, resisting arrest, operating to endanger, failure to stop for police and other offenses, police said.

Davis was held on $500 bail.

Prosecutors said Davis goes by at least four aliases. They said she's had several run-ins with the law -- but no criminal convictions.
