Reuters) - An escape attempt involving fires at a North Carolina prison left several employees injured on Thursday, and authorities placed the facility on lockdown, officials said.

The situation at the Pasquotank Correctional Institution in Elizabeth City was under control, the state Department of Public Safety said on Twitter, less than two hours after sending out an alert on social media about the incident.

The fires were set in the sewing plant at the prison and have been extinguished, the public safety agency said.

Few other details were immediately available about the incident at the prison in the northeast part of the state.

Sentara Albemarle Medical Center in Elizabeth City received six patients injured in the incident, the hospital said in a statement. It did not provide any details on their conditions.

The Pasquotank County Sheriff's Office sent a large number of deputies to respond to the emergency, a records clerk for the agency said by phone.

The Pasquotank Correctional Institution, a high-security prison for men, had 729 inmates on Thursday, according to the Department of Public Safety.

Representatives for the Department of Public Safety could not immediately be reached for further comment.
