Officers investigating a single car crash had to rethink their investigation when items in that car led them to the scene of a burglary just a few blocks away. Investigators said the home that was burglarized belongs to a former ICE transport officer. The suspects were in court earlier Saturday to hear the charges against them.

Officers said the suspects-- Tyler Stevens-Smith, Santiago Benavidez and Toure Britt-- forced open the locked garage door to a home on Whisper Mesa Street Southwest. According to a criminal complaint, that house belongs to a former ICE transport officer.

The criminal complaints against the men states they stole a gun, a tactical vest with the word "police" on it, a badge wallet and ammunition. They got into a crash at 86th and Sunset Gardens and when approached by officers, tried to run from the scene.

On Saturday, they were in court, where all three were charged with felony residential burglary. Two were let go on the own recognizance and will have to be under the supervision of Pretrial Services. The other is being held in custody until he can see a district court judge in early July.
