A shooting between two people who knew each other at the Holyoke Mall on Saturday has resulted in the death of a person authorities said was an innocent bystander.

The shooting suspect is in custody and there is no further threat to the public, Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni’s office said in a release Saturday evening.

“The Holyoke Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office is currently conducting a homicide investigation from a shooting that occurred earlier this evening at the Holyoke Mall at Ingleside,” the release stated.

According to the district attorney’s office, Holyoke police responded to the mall around 6:59 p.m. for a report of shots fired. A male victim was discovered at the scene and a suspect was immediately taken into custody.

“The victim was an innocent bystander to a confrontation between two other people,” The DA’s office said.

Video posted to social media Saturday night and captured by Winston Chen and Marlina Ku showed people yelling and running in the mall.

This is an active homicide investigation currently being conducted by the Holyoke Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden DA’s Office.
