HOLLYWOOD, CA — A young woman died Thursday after a man apparently followed her near her home in East Hollywood and shot her. Her killer remains at large.

The 27-year-old Cindy Lopez was killed as she walked near an apartment complex in the 900 block of North Oxford Avenue, south of Romaine Street, shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Tony Im said.

When paramedics arrived on the scene, they found her lying in the driveway of an apartment complex, not conscious or breathing, police said. They pronounced her dead at the scene.

Distraught family members told reporters the victim lived nearby with her mother and had been studying for a career in law.

Police don't know why she was targeted.

"We're still talking to everybody, talking to family members, talking to everybody in the area," LAPD Lt. John Radtke. said. "We don't know if the two know one another or not, but it does appear this is not a random act."

"Suspect was a male, possibly Hispanic, wearing shorts and a blue shirt and he took off northbound (on Oxford Avenue) on foot," according to Radtke.
