A robbery suspect in Jeffersontown who hit a Louisville police officer with his vehicle died Wednesday after a Louisville Metro Police officer shot him, according to authorities.

Louisville Metro Police spokesman Dwight Mitchell said LMPD officers were trying to stop a car in the 10200 block of Watterson Trail near Ruckriegel Parkway at about 10:30 a.m.

They believed the person driving the car was a suspect responsible for several business robberies in the Louisville area.

As officers tried to stop the car, an LMPD officer got out of his vehicle but was hit by the suspect's car, Mitchell said. The suspect's car also hit a Jeffersontown police officer's car, Mitchell said.

An LMPD officer shot at and struck the suspect in his vehicle, Mitchell said. The suspect was taken to University of Louisville Hospital and later pronounced dead, Mitchell said.

The officer hit by the suspect's vehicle is expected to be OK, Mitchell added.

The name of the suspect has not been released.

LMPD's public integrity unit is investigating the incident, Mitchell said.

LMPD Chief Steve Conrad will speak more about the incident Thursday after returning from out of town, Mitchell said.

The Jeffersontown Police Department posted on Facebook about 11 a.m. that traffic in all directions on Watterson Trail between Dell Road and Willow Avenue "is shut down until further notice."
