A New York man was arrested after police allegedly discovered a missing woman chained in his basement, authorities said.

The search was on for Michael Ciskiewic, 25, who allegedly fled after police in Niagara Falls using a bloodhound to track his missing neighbor were led to the basement of his home Sunday, WKBW reported.

After responding to a call about an assault, officers found no one at the woman’s home, but did find a broken window and a blood trail that eventually was lost down an alley.

Later that day, several members of the woman’s family called police to report her missing, and officers brought in a bloodhound that tracked her to a house several away from her own, according to the Niagara Gazette.

Police said the officers approaching that home’s the back door saw blood and could hear the woman screaming from inside.

Ciskiewic was believed to be in the home at the time and negotiations began over the phone with him, but after 12 hours, police who broke windows and tear-gassed the house realized he had fled.

Authorities reportedly found him hiding in a nearby industrial area. Ciskiewic, a father of two, faces charges of kidnapping, burglary, rape, assault and menacing with a weapon. He is due in court Tuesday.

Police said the woman told them she knew Ciskiewic as a neighbor and that he sometimes cut her grass. Late Sunday evening, she said she heard a knock on her door and when she opened it, she was allegedly attacked by Ciskiewic, authorities said.

She was believed to have been chained for about 13 hours, police said, according to WIVB. The woman was rushed to Erie County Medical Center, where she was treated before being released and is now in the care of her family, officials said.
