An elderly masked man has been arrested for allegedly robbing a bank at gunpoint.

Gilbert Paul Ware, 86, who was born before World War II, had entered a bank in Greenville, South Carolina, just after 9.30am on Monday morning, police allege.

He allegedly brandished a firearm and demanded shocked employees hand over money.

Employees complied with his demands and handed over an undisclosed sum of money.

Ware proceeded to get back into his car but managed a less-than-speedy getaway.

Officers from the Greenville Police Department caught up with the man minutes later, just a few blocks away.

He was located and arrested Ware at South Pleasantburg and East Antrim Drive after police had conducted a traffic stop.

The firearm used in the robbery was recovered as well as the stolen money.

Ware was arrested and remains in police custody. He has been charged with bank robbery, but more charges are expected to be made.

No injuries were reported in the bank robbery incident.
