Paul Shatswell, 45, the principal of the Pittsburg Adult Education Center, is in critical condition after being shot by his wife in a domestic dispute, police say.

An East Bay principal and father of eight, whom authorities say was shot by his wife this month, died Sunday, Pittsburg police said.

Paul Shatswell, 45, had been on life support and had slipped into a coma after he was shot in the small hours of March 16 at his home on Barrie Drive in Pittsburg, according to police. Shatswell was the principal of the Pittsburg Adult Education Center.

Contra Costa County prosecutors believe his wife, 39-year-old Maria Vides, shot Shatswell with a handgun after an argument. Last week, prosecutors charged her with with one count of attempted murder with special enhancements for using a firearm and inflicting a severe brain injury that caused paralysis.

After Shatswell’s death — Pittsburg’s only homicide so far this year— police investigators will seek murder charges against Vides, police said.

Vides remains in custody at the Martinez Detention Facility on $2.07 million bail.
