Rookie NYPD cop involved in fatal on-duty shooting dies by suicide on SI: reports

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A rookie NYPD officer involved in a fatal on-duty shooting last year died by suicide on Staten Island early Thursday, police said.

The 22-year-old man, who was not immediately identified, shot himself in the head around 1:50 a.m. inside a Woodrow home, police told the New York Post.

He was reportedly found with a gun next to him.

The officer was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His father, a retired sergeant, found the 22-year-old, who had recently joined the NYPD in October 2021 and worked midnight shifts in the 60th Precinct in Coney Island, sources told the paper.

The young cop is one of the four officers who shot at Jermaine Hickson, a domestic violence suspect, outside a Coney Island deli in November 2022.

Hickson, 42, a Harlem resident, began shooting as soon as the cops arrived and fired at least five shots at them, according to sources who spoke to the Daily News and surveillance footage recovered at the scene.

The officer is the third cop to shoot himself in the past three months.

In February, an NYPD officer shot survived after shooting himself in an apparent attempted suicide at the 47th Precinct stationhouse in the Bronx, according to police.

In January, an off-duty police officer fatally shot himself in a car near a park in Rosedale, Queens, the Daily News reported.
