San Joaquin County opens new, larger evacuation center as flood concerns remain
More than a dozen residents currently taking shelter there come from areas like Haven Acres Mobile Home Park in Lathrop and Airport Court in Manteca that remain devastated by floods. Evacuation orders are still in effect for both of these areas. Thomas Fortney is a Red Cross volunteer and helps to manage the senior center. “We have a couple of animals and we do have some children, some families,” Fortney said. “Those are sort of a priority as far as getting them to the next step, the housing.” County emergency officials say there’s a few reasons for the move, but the biggest reason is that there is still a possibly for further flood impacts and that there could be more people in need.
