Police were called to the Square One Mall just after 4 a.m., where they said a person broke into the Dick’s Sporting Goods store.

The person, who police later identified as a 16-year-old boy, was spotted on the property and was considered “armed and dangerous.”

The teen smashed a window of the sporting goods store, entered the building and was able to steal a gun, police said.

“A shattered window found at the Dicks Sporting Goods. Police saw the suspect, noticed a gun was stolen and then lost sight of him. Another officer made contact with him outside -- not knowing it was the suspect,” Revere Police Chief Capt. Dominic DiMella said.

Police and a SWAT team responded to the incident. Officers and K-9 units scanned the perimeter of the mall, and a State Police helicopter searched from overhead.

The teen fled the area and was apprehended in Everett, police said. The weapon has not been located.

No one was allowed to enter the mall during the search.

"We just pulled up and saw there was a whole bunch of police and everyone was giving us word of what was going on,” shopper Lisa Fuller said.

“I'm nervous, and the high school is just down the street,” shopper Heather Hill said.

The mall is near the Saugus middle and high schools. The schools were briefly put into a shelter and place mode.

After a final security sweep, officials said the mall would re-open. The Dick's Sporting Goods store will remain closed.
