A 73-year-old Texas man who had installed more than a dozen explosive devices in his home in a makeshift booby trap accidentally shot himself, police said Tuesday.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said officials found the man outside the Tomball house, where he is presumed to live, with a superficial gunshot on the right side of his body.

The unidentified man told the responding deputy that “there’s danger in the home,” a spokesperson said. When the deputy entered the house, he too was hit by one of the booby traps. The officer was not seriously hurt.

The Harris County SWAT team determined that every entrance to the home was rigged with a booby trap that set off a gunshot shell after finding at least 12 inside the residence. Officials set off the devices to secure safe removal.

Booby trapping a house is a felony in Texas.
