Firefighters are helping children who have experienced a traumatic or devastating event with teddy bears collected by residents of La Posada senior living community.

Station 65 received a unique donation Wednesday morning: boxes overflowing with teddy bears to accompany them on trips across Palm Beach Gardens.

“If there’s a house fire or a mom or dad or sibling are sick and we need to transport them to a hospital, those kids can kind of get upset. So, it’s just a way of giving them a stuffed animal to bring a little love and attention to them and a little gift for them to try to give them to calm them down a little bit,” Palm Beach Gardens Deputy Fire Chief James Ippolito told WPBF.

The first responders will also hand them out at the scene of a fire, car accident or other disturbing events.

Ann Mayberry was among 30 La Posada residents who helped coordinate the "Teddy Care" drive.

“The kids have a smile on their faces. What can be better than something to cuddle up to?” Mayberry said.

Donation boxes were placed around the neighborhood to collect small bears for little children and big bears for teenagers for nearly a month.

“We had a great time. It was fun watching in the box, it got bigger and more and bigger and bigger. There was also some tiny ones with babies,” Mayberry said.

Eighty-five bears were delivered to the station on Teddy Bear Picnic Day along with a few gifts for the firefighters.

“We got the little packets ready for the firemen themselves to thank them,” Mayberry said. “Little cookies and candies, sweet things for their breaks.”

The community plans on hosting the “Teddy Care” drive every year with deliveries set to go out on Teddy Bear Picnic Day.
