A giant 2,073-pound hog was crowned 'Pig King' at a contest in south-west China this week.

The male pig's big win was celebrated in a massive parade following the challenge, which was held on Tuesday in Meishan city, Sichuan province to usher in the upcoming Chinese New Year - also the Year of the Pig.

Incredible photos and video footage show a group of 24 men straining to carry the cage holding the 148-stone hog.

The nine-year-old pig, which belonged to a farm owned by Chengdu-based Yuan Baofeng Agricultural Group, is the heaviest pig in Renshou county.

Its proud caretaker, surnamed Liu, told Cover News the pig has an arrogant attitude and a bad temper, but is in excellent health despite its relatively old age. Pigs that are well cared for can live an average lifespan of 15 years.

In 2010, the farm selected a group of pigs - including the 'Pig King' - to undergo a trial to test the microbial waste degradation technology developed by the company.

experiment aims to determine how heavy a pig could grow and how long it could live without being slaughtered, according to the report.

As a result, the pig's weigh slowly climbed over the years and he was never sick, Liu said.

'It's very rare to see such a healthy and heavy pig,' he said. In comparison, an average adult pig weighs around 308 pounds.

The 'Pig King' is also scheduled to star in a CCTV agriculture programme that will be aired during the Chinese New Year period, the report said.

The farm is not going to sell the massive animal and will donate its carcass to the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences for research when it dies, company spokesperson Yang Maozhong told reporters.

Sichuan province is China's biggest pig-farming region, slaughtering 69 million pigs in 2016, according to official data. Renshou county alone slaughtered 1.3 million pigs in 2018.

The heaviest pig on Chinese record is from Liaoning province in east China. 'Ton Pig' weighed 1,974 pounds and measured 8ft 2in in length. It died in 2004 at the age of four.

The largest pig ever recorded in human history was 'Big Bill' from Jackson, Tennessee, weighing in at more than 2,550 pounds.
