Spurs’ Kawhi Leonard questionable for Game 3

Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard is listed as questionable for Game 3 of the Western Conference finals Saturday against the Warriors.

“I’m not sure, I mean, it’s still not ready,” Leonard told reporters Friday morning of his sprained left ankle. “It’s just questionable for tomorrow. I could be feeling way better. We’ll see tomorrow.”

Leonard missed Game 6 of the Western Conference semifinals against Houston after spraining the ankle in the fourth quarter of Game 5. He re-sprained it twice in the third quarter of Game 1 on Sunday, the second time when he landed on the foot of Zaza Pachulia after a jump shot.

MRI results on Leonard’s ankle revealed no structural damage. With Leonard back at the team hotel in San Francisco, Jonathon Simmons started Game 2 on Tuesday and had a team-high 22 points in 26 minutes.

Still, this much is certain: A healthy Leonard would significantly buoy the Spurs’ chances of digging out of their 2-0 series hole. In addition to being a Defensive Player of the Year candidate, he leads San Antonio this postseason in scoring (27.7), rebounding (7.8), assists (4.6) and steals (1.7).

“Just seeing if I can run and at least be myself on the court,” Leonard said. “Don’t want to hobble around or shoot off-balance shots. Just want to be able to push with both legs. Just that, really.”
