Felicidades! The Queen of Salsa Celia Cruz is making history as the first Afro-Latina to appear on the U.S. Quarter! Azucar!

Azucar! Queen Of Salsa Celia Cruz Makes History As First Afro-Latina To Appear On U.S. Quarter 

The legendary Cuban American performer was selected specifically by the United States Mint and will become one of five honorees for the 2024 American Women Quarters Program.

The program is said to be a four-year initiative that honors the achievements and services of American women.

According to reports, the U.S. Mint will be releasing up to five new designs each year, beginning in 2022 and continuing through 2025. The coins are expected to be released in mid-2023.

Celia Cruz, who passed away back in 2003, was also known as Úrsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso. Cruz, who had the infamous rallying phrase: “Azucar!,” was one of the 20th century’s most famous Latin performers, and is deemed a cultural icon.

She has won several honors and awards — which include: a National Medal of Arts; five Grammy Awards; and a posthumous Grammy for Lifetime Achievement.

The other four honorees include: Patsy Takemoto Mink (the first woman of color to serve in Congress); Dr. Mary Edwards Walker (a Civil War era surgeon, women’s rights advocate, and an abolitionist); Pauli Murray (a poet, writer, activist, lawyer, and Episcopal priest; and Zitkala-Ša (a writer, composer, educator, and political activist for Native Americans’ right to United States citizenship).

Speaking on the Program, U.S. Mint Director Ventris C. Gibson said, “All of the women being honored have lived remarkable and multi-faceted lives, and have made a significant impact on our Nation in their own unique way. The women pioneered change during their lifetimes, not yielding to the status quo imparted during their lives. By honoring these pioneering women, the Mint continues to connect America through coins which are like small works of art in your pocket.”
