Cuomo says Trump’s ‘responsible for every COVID death in New York’ amid spiraling feud

President Trump has the blood of New Yorkers on his hands, according to Gov. Cuomo.

Cuomo charged Tuesday that Trump’s to blame for “every” COVID-19 death in the Empire State, as the war of words between the Queens natives reached a new fever pitch.

The governor made the blunt assessment about the more than 33,000 New Yorkers killed by COVID-19 while on a daily phone briefing with reporters.

“I hold Donald Trump responsible for every death in New York State from COVID because Trump lied," Cuomo said. "And in combination with his lies, he was incompetent. It was his lie that said this was nothing to worry about, that this was a hoax.”

New York got hit harder than any other state at the peak of the pandemic, with nearly 1,000 residents dying from the respiratory virus every day.

If Trump had warned Americans earlier about the dangers of the virus instead of repeatedly downplaying it, New York could’ve been better prepared and fewer lives would’ve been lost, Cuomo said.

Cuomo also called bull on Trump’s incessant finger-pointing at China and suggested the president only has himself to blame.

"New York State had that big burst because it came from Europe, and not China, and they never did a European travel ban because he was lying to the American people,” Cuomo said. “He is the super-spreader that brought the virus to America.”

Cuomo’s hard-knuckled accusations came on the heels of Trump claiming in a tweet Monday that the governor displayed “tremendously poor leadership skills” by publishing and promoting a new book amid the pandemic.

On Tuesday, White House spokeswoman Sarah Matthews did the talking for Trump.

“Cuomo failed to protect innocent New Yorkers from COVID-19 as he recklessly forced positive individuals into his state’s nursing homes while writing a self-promotional book,” Matthews said after Cuomo’s outburst, referring to the governor’s since-reversed policy on nursing homes. "His revisionist history cannot erase his grossly incompetent decisions or the fact that President Trump took bold, aggressive actions that saved lives in New York and every state across the country.”

Despite Matthews' statement, Trump admitted to journalist Bob Woodward this spring that he publicly downplayed the severity of COVID-19 because he didn’t want to cause “panic."

More than 220,000 Americans have died from COVID-19 on Trump’s watch — the worst death toll in the world.

New York currently has one of the lowest COVID-19 infection rates in the country, thanks to widespread compliance with social distancing and face mask guidelines. Most other states are seeing sharp upticks in infections, in large part because many of them rushed to reopen their economies.

Trump, meanwhile, has continued to dismiss concerns about COVID-19 resurgences, holding jam-packed rallies across the country and claiming that the U.S. is “rounding the corner” of the pandemic.
