"No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion..." Obama tweeted, featuring a photo of him talking to small children of different ethnicities through a window.

The quote comes from Mandela's 1994 inaugural address, when he became the first black presidentĀ of South Africa.

Obama's message comes hours after a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va. turned violent. A car plowed into a crowd of anti-fascism protestors, killing one person and leaving more than a dozen others injured.

Two Virginia State police officers were also killed when their helicopter crashed, which authorities linked to the rally.

President Trump condemned the violence at the rally but refused to single out white supremacists in his comments, drawing fire from GOP senators who demanded he call the event an attack of terror.
