Passengers said the bus driver was driving at high speeds, causing the bus to roll over at around 12:20 p.m. local time, the Associated Press reported. There was no inclement weather in the region at the time, and no passengers were thrown from the bus.
“It was a heavily damaged bus, he slid down the road quite a ways, so there was a lot of wreckage,” firefighter Tim Bonney told the AP. “Just to put it in perspective, on a scale of zero to 10, an eight.”
The bus was managed by a Las Vegas-based company and traveling to the West Rim of the Canyon, according to the sheriff’s office. The West Rim, though technically outside the boundaries of Grand Canyon National Park, includes the Canyon’s famous Skywalk.
