Interstate I-265 remains closed after a sinkhole opened up, but crews hope to have it open by Wednesday evening.

The eastbound lanes of I-265 have been closed between Charlestown Road and I-65 since the sinkhole opened overnight.

Officials said the hole formed just before midnight at the Floyd and Clark county lines.

Traffic is not being allowed onto the ramps at those locations.

The sinkhole will continue to impact traffic through the evening. INDOT will close the the other side of the road around 6 p.m. to make sure the hole doesn't extend under westbound lanes. Alternating lane closures will be in effect for about two hours, INDOT said.

The entire road is expected to reopen in the evening, but officials did not give an exact time.

Indiana State Police said two people died in a crash that was caused by the traffic backup. Three other people were injured.

WLKY viewer Cara Chumley said she hit the hole on her way to work Wednesday morning.

Chumley said the hole busted her front passenger side tire. She said officers helped her change her tire before she took herself to the hospital for evaluation.

Crews started digging into the hole shortly before 7 a.m. WLKY Chopper HD pilot Bill Dereamer said it appeared they were pulling the asphalt off to expose how deep the hole was.
