A father and his 22-year-old son drowned in a rock quarry on private property at Silver Creek Materials on Saturday night, officials said.

The quarry is in the 2200 block of Silver Creek Road, just north of White Settlement.

Fort Worth Fire Department Firefighter Kyle Clay said the men went into the water at about 7:35 p.m. Witnesses said the son began to drown and his father went in to try and save him. Neither man resurfaced.

Clay said dive team crews were at the rock quarry until after 10:30 p.m. Saturday, but had to call off the recovery because of the dangers of nighttime diving.

“It’s a rock quarry, so the water is very dark,” Clay said. “They’re driving 50 to 100 feet down and the temperature at those lower depths was about 15 degrees.”

Clay said the team went back to the property at about 8 a.m. Sunday morning.
